The
story so far!
The Swindon TopCats were formed in 1990 by current club president
Bob Townsend and entered Division One South for the 1990-1991 season.
The girls had an amazing first year and gained promotion to the Premier
League, Britain's top division, where they remained for 14 years until
a cruel 1-0 defeat in the relegation playoff sent them back down for
the 2005-2006 season. However, after three years in Division One, the
2007-2008 season saw the team win all 18 league games, plus the Division
One and Promotion Playoffs to gain promotion back to the Premier League
for the 2008-2009 season.
The team's
best finishes in the Premier League so far have been in 1995 and 1997
when they placed third and reached the Premier playoffs, narrowly losing
out to Bracknell and Sunderland, respectively.
The TopCats have twice travelled to compete in international
tournaments. In 1994 they went to Rouen in France and came home with
the silver medal after competing against French, Belgian and Czech opponents,
and in 1998 they travelled to Canada to enter the Brampton Tournament
in Ontario. The girls had a fantastic time and managed a win and a draw
against Canadian opposition.
The TopCats also organise and host their own tournament
every summer. The British Women's Friendship Tournament has been held
in late June for the past five years, and is a weekend-long event open
to all British women's league teams. It has been a huge success and
aims to allow players of all standards to compete in a friendly environment.
The club recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. The team
has had a great decade, providing a lot of enjoyment for a lot of girls,
and we hope to be around for many years to come!
